What is an inmate trust fund and how does it work?

We Answered:

I work in the medical dept. in a prison. People can send money to inmates that places it in a trust fund for them to use when they need it....at the canteen or paying the minimal fees charged them for seeing a doctor or getting copies of their medical files etc. I'm sure there are other types of necessities they could be charged while in prison also, but I am only familiar with these. For instance, a charge for seeing the doctor is $5.00 and a charge for 1 copy of a document is 10 cents. The costs may be different at different institutions. This does not mean that if an inmate does not have the funds to obtain medical services or get needed copies for court etc., that he will not receive them, but if funds arrive for him, then deductions are taken out of his trust fund for back payment. Hope this helps.
