My mutual funds rep has me in debt to a life insurance company because of low mutual fund performance. Help?We Answered:
Doesn't make sense! I can understand a penalty, I can also understand a poor performing mutual fund. 98% of all managed mutual funds are down for the year. Read your policy, it will state what your early withdrawl penalty will be. If your mutual fund has gone down more than 40%, your rep really sucks. If you find their is fraud, you will have to get with your attorney general.Lonnie Said:
what is the role of equity funds in the performance of mutual funds? We Answered:
mutual fund performance it tied directly to the equities it holds. A debt fund peformance is tied to interest rates only and has a basic fixed return assuming interest rates stay unchanged. The equities a fund holds however account for all of its performance either up or down. The performance may come from people bidding up the values of the equities because they are bullish or bidding down the values because they are bearish. Or it may come from the inproved earnings of the underlying equities. In very bullish markets, equities may increase in value 50%. In very bearish markets, equities may decrease in value 50%. Debt based funds normally show more limited returns, but during inflationary times debt based funds may loose significant value as their underlying debt investments loose value.Carmen Said:

Where can I get advice for future performance of mutual funds and/or stocks.?We Answered:
There is no trustworthy list of stocks. The stock market is highly unpredictable. In a way you could argue it is "designed" to be unpredictable. Let's suppose most people knew that XYZ stock was an obvious good buy. What would they do? They'd buy the stock and push the price up so high that it would soon be too high. At that point, people would worry it was too high, and it wouldn't be an obvious good buy. That's why there can not be an obvious good buy. (This is an oversimplification, but it does explain why there is no list of obvious great shots.)To invest in the stock market, you buy a diversified group of stocks, either on your own, or through a mutual fund. You hold out for the long run (greater than 20 years), and you will do well through many up and downs.
I like Vanguard.com they have many mutual funds that have done well over greater than 25 years, like Windsor and the 500 Index Fund.

How do you assess the performance of different mutual funds? We Answered:
I don't go back that long ... 2 years is too long, and several factors may have its part in the fund's performance. When picking up MF, I just look for the top performing fund the last 3 to 6 mos. A year at the most. Chances are, the manager, money invested in, etc. are still the same.
Take for example, last November, I noticed that DPCAX was performing fantastically. (At yearend '06 it made some 62+% including dividend!). I bought some of it before the year is over. So far, YTD it made 34+%. The slowest performer I had this year made 10+%. I just dropped it last month in favor of another one. So far this new one made 4+% for me. I don't mind paying load if its
performance "guarantees" (as latest data shows) I can get more back.
I do the same on stocks. Watch for the breakers, those that always hit a new highs. That trend does stop abruptly. Choice the one with low P/E. If possible too, prefer the one that gives dividend.
Another way (on stock), is look for a loser big company (say Ford), whose stock doesn't negatively react any further on any bad news about it. It may have reach its bottom. Changes are, it's on its way up. It happened to me several times - most notable were Chrysler and Caterpillar.

Where do we find the performance of mutual funds? We Answered:
I think you'll end up comparing your " selected" funds to " average" or "widely-held" funds....and you can do that on yahoo after you get a quote for YOUR fund....click on "charts" and there is a box to enter symbols of other funds..... something like FAIRX, FBALX, NBGEX...would be " average" funds.....
