Ben Said:

How do I search mutual funds by sector, lets say looking for a fund that concentrates on transportation sector

We Answered:

Yes, Morningstar is good but the information is limited unless you pay a fee. If you have an IRA you should check with them as well. Most investment companies have excellent mutual fund screeners now. I use TD Ameritrade and they have great investment tools that help me pick my stocks and mutual funds.

Brian Said:

how do i find mutual funds to invest in w/ the least minimum investment requirement?

We Answered:

Not sure how you find them all. A good diversified fund is the Vanguard Star Fund. It has a minimum initial investment of $1000 and subsequent investments of only $100.

It invests in Large, small and foreign stocks as well as bonds.

go to Vanguard.com or call them for more info.

Ramona Said:

Is there a free online tool to find mutual funds by asset composition?

We Answered:

Why not buy the stocks yourself??? Yahoo has good tools that are free, but usually the top 10 holdings are all that's listed. An easier way may be to pull up the quote of the stocks you like, and click on "major holders". This is a feature on Yahoo finance. This will tell you what institutions and fund companies hold the most shares of that stock.

Sherri Said:

Where can I go, what internet site, to find all Mutual Funds for comparison?

We Answered:

You would have to subscribe to Barron's, Investor's Business Daily or the Wall Street Journal. I think the Wall Street Journal site is the cheapest.

Of course you could buy any of these at a newstand.

Brokerage firms may provide the service. I know Schwab does, but sometimes it is limited to only a portion of the funds available.

Carole Said:

How do you find out which mutual funds invest in a certain stock?

We Answered:

Yahoo finance lists that information, but only to a certain extent. If you have access to a Bloomberg terminal (or you can get a friend or a stockbroker to check for you) you can find the information there.

Some financial libraries such as at business schools have Bloomberg terminals, but at $1,500 a month a lot of libraries can't afford them.

It doesn't matter where you get the information, it will be old. Mutual funds reveal that information quarterly and by the time the SEC gets their reports, the funds may have sold the stocks.

I hope this helps.

Viola Said:

Why may a mutual fund family find it beneficial to offer 50 or 60 different stock mutual funds?

We Answered:

Mutual funds offer an array of different types of investment strategy - some may be large cap, others may be small cap - some may be large value, others may be large blend. So a mutual fund family would offer 50-60 different mutual funds so that it can cater to a wide variety of investors. Some people in there early 30s would have a different asset allocation and investment strategy than a 50 year old. Therefore, they would probably buy different mutual funds - but they may be in the same family.
