Why shouldn't the government fund elite sporting organisations? We Answered:
A better question might be: why should they? Why should I, as a non-fan, be forced to pay for a seriously resource-draining, polluting behemoth of a stadium to be built in my city to attract a ton of annoying fan traffic and make millions and millions of dollars for team owners who are already plenty-rich and probably paying less in taxes than I am?
I support paying taxes to pay for things that will benefit society at large, like for instance, SCHOOLS, maybe? Public transportation? Pot-hole filling? Not to reline the pockets of a bunch of suits.

That The Victorian Government Should Not Fund All Major Sporting Events? We Answered:
Bummer... looks like I missed answering your question before the debate. How'd it go?Tracey Said:
should the victorian government fund major sporting events? We Answered:
I thought that to a certain extent they already did. They fund the Grand Prix and loose money on that every time it is run. The swimming recently at Rod Laver Arena cost a fortune. I think perhaps they should spread the joy a little farther though as many sporting events are held that they dont fund. I know the local club that my boys race under is attempting to get the national junior motocross next year and the government certainly havent provided much help.Mitchell Said:
Why should the government never fund sports? We Answered:
Because unlike other government funded programs (health, education, transportation, etc.), sports are a form of entertainment and would not benefit the majority of the population, even though they do often promote healthier living (minus the whole "illegal steroids" issue.)And then there's the issue of where this money would come from. Would it be taken from citizen taxes, like other public services?
Plus, sports are often extremely biased. Consider, for example, the average American high school: men's football and basketball almost always gets the majority of school funding because they bring in the biggest crowds, whereas less crowd-pleasing but equally physical promotions such as fencing, tennis, and wrestling often receive less funding. How would the government go about fairly splitting the funds between so many age groups, sports, and organizations? Would only professional teams be funded? They already get significant pay. Or school organizations? This would probably start a debate with every local Little League and Mighty Might in the area.
In short, I think "sport" is just far too broad a topic to throw any money at.
Hope this has helped.

"That the government should not fund major sporting events." Negative 3rd speaker? We Answered:
Oh my god... your doing the same debate as me. What team are you??Well, i think that the Victorian government should not fund major sporting events because this money could go to the poor and put into schools and infrastructure. They could put the money into my school, which had recently gotten a building burnt down.
