Terrence Said:

Do American citizens have a right to government-funded health care?

We Answered:

No. Americans have no right to anything that is gotten by stealing money from those people who worked to earn it. American is not a socialist country. And we need to get rid of the socialism we already have. But I am hopeful that my generation, the baby boomers, will soon break the back of our socialist government by demanding all the benefits and programs we have been forced to pay for all our working lives. It's our turn to collect now. And it will get expensive to support us all. Government health care will be a dream when the bill comes due in the next few years. We will be known as the generation that saved America from socialism. Cool.

Wade Said:

What do you think of right wing pundit Bill Kristols admission about government-run health care?

We Answered:

People on Medicare have better health care than those of us on private insurance.

Medicare never denies care and never cancels someone because they need expensive care.

My private insurance goes up every year, covers less every year, tells me what hospital I must go to, and what prescription drugs they will cover.

And if I don't go to the hospital they tell me to go to, I am on my own. If I need a prescription they don't cover, I have to pay cash.

And they can cancel me at any time for any reason.

Wilma Said:

Will GM's new union contract add pressure to the government funded health care coverage debate?

We Answered:

I think employers in the U.S. have been trying to cut all sorts of benefits, not just health care, and the unions, not exactly models of courage, have gone along with it. With less than 9% of U.S. labor in unions, that "pressure" you speak of on government won't amount to much. Even in the "Democratic" Party that pretends to be pro-labor, candidates may show up at union forums but don't actually do anything to help workers.

While socialist-style government-supplied health care would be a drastic improvement to the current mess, I think what's most _likely_ to happen is a "state capitalist" Hillary-style giveaway to the insurance companies. And unless the union leaders start thinking about more than just their current dues base and start actually fighting back against the employers, unions THEMSELVES may become a thing of the past. U.S. employers aren't just fighting for "better contracts" for themselves -- they have have never reconciled themselves to the idea that workers deserve any voice at all, and their ultimate goal is eliminating labor organizations altogether.

There is not one case on record of a U.S. state being forced to repeal a "right to starve" -- oops -- a "right to work" law, or "at-will" employment laws, which are the biggest obstacles to union representation. And although a few big states like Cal, NY and Michigan have slightly better laws (on this! not other things!), most Americans live in 19th century conditions in terms of labor rights.

Heck, dude not only health care, but the LUNCH BREAK and the 8 HOUR DAY will soon be things of the past unless something is done.

The ONLY things that can save the situation for U.S. workers is a massive expansion of the labor movement into industries that are currently unorganized, for "two-tier" sellouts to be dropped ENTIRELY, for immigrant workers to be brought into the struggle, to ignore rules against secondary site picketing, and for connections to be forged with union movements in the places where the companies run away to. Unfortunately right now labor leaders are more interested in preserving their little fiefdoms and don't organize in new places, and they have given in to their cowardly impulses and joined in on blaming immigrants, "foreign companies" and workers in other countries for the bad labor conditions. We don't have any "immigrant labor problem" -- what we have is an AMERICAN BOSS PROBLEM.

If CAPITAL is international, LABOR has to be too -- and that means a little harder work than just adding "International" to your union's name because you have organized a couple of plants in Canada. Could the current soft, sell-out U.S. union leaders HANDLE organizing in places like Mexico or Malaysia? I doubt it. Besides which, after years of going along with the owners of the US on foreign policy, the "AFL-CIA" doesn't have much credibility overseas.

We need a new international union movement, and we need to take the gloves off when we deal with these greedy employers. Otherwise, prepare to be chained to your work table.
