well NIH grants are all FOIA-ablebut really, how "in-depth" can you get? saying research is "expensive" is almost an understatement--biomedical research is very very expensive...but the benefits are extremely worth it. but in general, we don't really see immediate results from monies donated. biomedical research not only takes up a lot of money, it can also involve a lot of time and effort by many many people
