Is there a good Vangurard fund for growth and income that can compare to American Funds Capital Income Builder

Probably the closest is Wellesley Income Fund. You are correct about the front-end load. Vanguard funds are no-loads.

Vickie Said:

IS the American FUnds... Growth Fund of AMerican Mutual Fund "too big for its own good"??????

We Answered:

You would think that huge funds like this one would have a big disadvantage (for the reasons you mention), but empirical evidence shows otherwise. Most large funds have continued to do well relative to the broader market, despite their size.

If you're concerned, you can use this fund for just a portion of your assets, and/or dollar-cost average (DCA) your investment so that you can take advantage of market downturns during your DCA period.

I hope that helps - good luck.

Jeremy Said:

During Oct. 2007 I bought quite a bit of American Growth Funds, it's not doing so hot...time to bail?

We Answered:

As far as growth funds go, Growth Fund of America--that is the one you mean??-- is one of the better of the lot and its holdings are sound. It is a little on the large size but that might be a strength in today's market. If however all of your funds are invested here you might consider a strategic reallocation of a portion of your funds maybe. Income Fund of America is a little less volitile. Moving 1/2 over to that fund might allow you to sleep a little sounder at night.

Irene Said:

Investors: Are you happy with American Funds, specifically the Growth Fund of America (class A)?

We Answered:

I have had my account with them for seven months. Actually four different funds. I am pulling my account tomorrow, and rolling into my IRA at work. The broker did better (out of commissions) than me: Growth Fund of America has lost me money, the others did okay, but not fantastic.

Olga Said:

Are mutual funds required to disclose ALL fees they will charge in the prospectus?

We Answered:

"You will be charged a $10 fee for opening an Account with CollegeAmerica as well as an annual $10 Account maintenance fee.
